The 2020 East Coast Arabian Championships were held between 22-25 January at Sydney International Equestrian Centre. A prestigious show organised by the NSW Arabian Horse Association and run over four days.
This is a show for spectators as well as competitors with the stunning Arabian Purebred and Derivatives horses competing in the halter classes and very well-represented rider classes. Closing with a 60s themed finals party on Saturday night this was an event to remember.
Five judge scoring was introduced for the derivative halter so, with two full days of five-judge scoring, Horse Mark certainly made life easier for the Judges, Stewards and Committee with no paper sheets and data entry to worry about!
The NSW AHA and their president, Catherine Brown, are strong supporters of the youth competitors, which - let's face it - are the future of the industry. The strong turnout of competitors at the youth ring on Saturday is a credit to this committee and their continued interest in growing a strong and positive community around this wonderful breed of horses. Supported by well-sponsored classes with beautiful ribbons and garlands what young competitors wouldn't want to be competing here?
When I was able to break away from the purebred scoring to sneak up to the youth ring to watch my daughter compete, I was incredibly impressed with how supportive the competitors and their families were towards each other while waiting to enter their classes - sharing tips and advice and even equipment such as stocks to use in the ring.
My daughter, as one of the younger competitors, had her ups and downs as everyone has at shows and the words of encouragement, she received from others was heart-warming.
Did you know the 2020 East Coast Arabian Championships marked the first anniversary for Horse Mark? Yes, that's right, 2019 East Coast was Horse Mark's first show! As Horse Mark's debut show in 2019, run over four days, we replaced paper ring sheets for marshalling and recording results. I am going to call it - I believe this was a first in Australia and maybe the world to digitally marshal and score a show? BIG CALL, I know!
I'd love to hear if anyone else is doing it. If so, please message me.
EC2019 also saw the launch of Horse Mark digital scorecards. I'm aware versions have been used internationally for some time now, so while this is not entirely new, it is a first for Australia. At EC2019, the purebred halter classes were run on Horse Mark with five judges individually scoring on the Horse Mark iPads; the system calculating the results while dropping the highest and lowest scores by category before calculating the final results.
What a big first year!
Horse Mark was used to score nine shows across two states:
- 4,500 entries marshalled and judged across 1,300 individual classes.
- Judges have entered over 4000 scorecards via the Horse Mark App in this time
The solution quickly and accurately calculates multiple judge classes.
The feedback is consistent, HorseMark has freed committee's from the reams of paper historically used for capturing results, giving these volunteer committees back hours of their time.
This was a monumental first year and the feedback from Judges, Stewards and Committee confirm we are on the right path!
'Great product!! As a judge, have used many. Yours best so far!' - USA Arabian Judge
'It is a great production. It will revolutionise horse show scoring and results very soon.' - Australian Judge
'A fantastic system and made my job and many others' jobs so much easier!' - Chief Steward
'It was SO easy to do late entries and changes to classes, your system is amazing. Looking forward to working with it and you at future shows.' - Secretary & Show Office
As an experienced technologist who has discovered a passion for Horses and enjoys being part of the showing community, I aim to provide innovative digital solutions that ease some pressure for hard-working committees and add value to the horse showing community.
With growing interest from other event organisers, 2020 is shaping up to be another good year for Horse Mark and I certainly look forward to East Coast 2021!
